The study on the proposed legal amendments regulating the acquisition and possession of assets by monks has been suspended, according to the religious committee of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA). ACM Arkom said the chairman felt that the study, if pursued, would ignite social discord and ordered the study be suspended. An ad hoc panel was formed headed by Somporn Thepsitha to study the proposed amendments to Sections 1622 and 1623 of the Civil Code governing the monks' assets. The Somporn committee held two meetings earlier before the proposed amendments were put on hold yesterday. ACM Arkom said although the Somporn committee was authorised by the NLA to conduct the study, it was technically impossible for the NLA to proceed with the amendments now.
